St Mary bush fires have left farmers facing major agricultural losses after prolonged dry conditions and repeated fires damaged crops, irrigation equipment and farm infrastructure across several communities.

The Jamaica Observer reported on September 20 that farmers described
weeks of fires moving through agricultural areas, with dry vegetation,
difficult terrain and low water levels complicating attempts to contain
the damage.

St Mary Bush Fires Hit Farming Communities

Affected areas cited in the report include Mount Regale, Rock River and Clarke Castle. Farmers reported losses involving plantain, cane, corn, greenhouses, irrigation pipes and drip hoses.

Some agricultural properties are located away from accessible roads, limiting the ability of fire units to reach the flames directly. Farmers said crews have responded but have often had to prioritize the protection of homes.

Drought Makes Fire Risk Worse

One farmer told the Observer that the area had experienced more than 13
weeks of drought conditions. Low river levels have also reduced the
amount of water available for residents attempting to fight fires or
protect agricultural land.

The Rural Agricultural Development Authority has reportedly visited some
affected farms to assess damage, although additional fires occurred
after some assessments.

Farmers Call for Support

The losses raise immediate concerns about farmer recovery and the cost
of replacing irrigation systems, planting material and other
infrastructure. The scale of the overall agricultural loss has not yet
been independently quantified.

For communities dependent on farming, the combination of drought and
recurring fire represents both an environmental and economic threat.
Further official assessments will be important in determining the extent
of the damage and what relief may be available.

The impact of the St Mary bush fires could extend beyond individual farms if crop losses and damaged irrigation infrastructure affect production in the coming weeks. Continued assessments will be needed to establish the full agricultural cost and determine what assistance affected farmers may receive.
