Protoje has extended the visual world of his seventh studio album, The Art of Acceptance, with a new music video for “Love Overflow.”
The visual was filmed in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and follows young women from the Addis Girls Skate collective through the city. Rather than treating Ethiopia simply as a backdrop, the video places youth, movement and everyday city life at the centre of the story.
“Love Overflow” appears on The Art of Acceptance, released in April through In.Digg.Nation Collective under exclusive licence to Ineffable Records. The song was produced by Winta James, Ziah .Push and Protoje.
The new video continues a run of visuals connected to the album. Reggae-focused outlets including Reggae.fr and ReggaeWorld reported the video release in recent days, while Rootfire included it in its September 28 Reggae Release Radar.
The Ethiopia setting also connects with themes Protoje has explored around growth, responsibility and what one generation leaves for the next. The visual’s focus on young skaters gives those ideas a contemporary, street-level setting rather than a conventional performance treatment.
For Jamaican reggae, the release is another example of a current artist building visual connections between the Caribbean and Africa while keeping the music rooted in a modern reggae framework.
