Jamaica’s King of Comedy continues entertaining international audiences while investing in the next generation of Caribbean artists, storytellers and creative leaders.

For generations, Oliver Samuels has brought laughter into Caribbean homes, filled theatres around the world and established himself as one of Jamaica’s most beloved cultural figures.

But beyond the unforgettable characters, comedic performances and remarkable entertainment career lies another ambition: helping young people achieve opportunities that might otherwise remain beyond their reach.

Through the Oliver Samuels Foundation, the legendary Jamaican actor and comedian is working to transform his personal success into something that will continue benefiting Caribbean communities for generations.

And this time, the mission extends well beyond entertainment.

From Making People Laugh to Changing Lives

Born in Harmony Hall, St. Mary, Jamaica, Oliver Samuels rose from humble beginnings to become an internationally recognized performer whose work helped define Caribbean television and theatre.

His celebrated career, including the iconic television series Oliver at Large, has made him a household name among Jamaicans and Caribbean communities worldwide.

Yet the same determination that helped him build his career now drives a different kind of undertaking.

The Oliver Samuels Foundation was established to expand access to post-secondary education, particularly for promising young people pursuing careers in the arts and creative industries.

Its work focuses on scholarships, mentorship, cultural development and reducing the financial barriers that can prevent talented students from realizing their ambitions.

For Samuels, preserving Caribbean culture also means investing in the people who will carry it forward.

A Foundation Already Making a Difference

In January 2026, the Oliver Samuels Foundation reached an important milestone when it awarded its inaugural scholarship to Dante Saunders, a first-year student at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in Kingston, Jamaica.

Saunders, who studies arts management and humanities, received an award valued at J$300,000.

The January 14 presentation demonstrated that the foundation’s mission was moving beyond promises and into tangible support for young Caribbean talent.

It also highlighted a wider challenge facing the creative sector: talent alone is not always enough when students lack the financial resources, professional connections or institutional support needed to complete their education.

The foundation has outlined an ambition to award four scholarships annually, expanding its reach to deserving students in Jamaica and throughout the Caribbean diaspora.

A Mission That Crosses Borders

Although deeply rooted in Jamaica, the Oliver Samuels Foundation has an international vision.

Its educational ambitions extend to Caribbean communities in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and beyond.

Institutions associated with its educational outreach include Jamaica’s Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts and Toronto Metropolitan University’s School of Performance.

This international approach reflects the same worldwide Caribbean audience that has supported Oliver Samuels throughout his entertainment career.

It also creates opportunities for businesses, community organizations, educational institutions and members of the diaspora to contribute to something with a lasting cultural and educational impact.

Still Making Audiences Laugh: Oliver Samuels Takes His Comedy on Tour

Even as he builds his foundation’s educational legacy, Oliver Samuels shows no signs of slowing down on stage.

The Jamaican comedy legend is currently touring the United Kingdom with his theatrical production, Where Dere’s A Will, Dere’s A Criminal, a lively comedy written and directed by Samuels himself.

The production follows the family of Charles Wilkins, a deceased Jamaican businessman whose passing triggers a chaotic battle over his inheritance.

As relatives gather for the reading of his will, greed, family secrets and unexpected revelations set the stage for a series of hilarious confrontations.

Joining Samuels in the production are fellow performers Tesfa Edwards, Karen Harriott and Angela Jarrett.

Following performances in Canada, the United States and several UK cities, the production continues its British run with a scheduled appearance at London’s Hackney Empire on Saturday, October 31, 2026.

For Samuels, the production represents another chapter in a remarkable entertainment career spanning more than five decades.

It also highlights the connection between his professional accomplishments and the mission of the Oliver Samuels Foundation.

While he continues entertaining audiences and celebrating Caribbean storytelling on international stages, his foundation seeks to create educational opportunities for the next generation of creative talent.

On stage, Oliver Samuels continues making people laugh. Through his foundation, he is working to give young people something equally valuable: an opportunity to build their own future.

A Conversation That Deserves a Wider Audience

During a recent interview on MadVibez Radio’s Talk Di Tingz, Oliver Samuels discussed his foundation and its ambitions.

While audiences have long recognized Samuels for his extraordinary ability to entertain, the conversation introduced another dimension of the man behind the comedy.

His desire to help deserving students pursue higher education deserves attention far beyond a single interview.

The challenge now is ensuring that the foundation’s mission reaches people and organizations capable of supporting it.

Scholarships require sustainable funding. Educational partnerships require strong relationships. And meaningful charitable initiatives need consistent public awareness to develop lasting momentum.

For Caribbean communities worldwide, this represents an opportunity to do more than celebrate an entertainment legend.

It represents a chance to participate in building his legacy.

The Next Chapter of Oliver Samuels’ Legacy

Oliver Samuels has already secured an extraordinary place in Caribbean cultural history.

His contributions to theatre, television and comedy have entertained generations, preserved aspects of Jamaican identity and introduced Caribbean storytelling to international audiences.

But perhaps one of his most meaningful contributions will emerge through the students whose education and creative ambitions are supported by the foundation bearing his name.

Those students may become tomorrow’s actors, playwrights, filmmakers, musicians, producers, cultural advocates and community leaders.

Their achievements could form a living continuation of everything Samuels has spent his career representing.

The laughter has already reached generations. Now the opportunity exists for his legacy to change generations.

How to Support the Oliver Samuels Foundation
