Independent Artist Digital Sales & Distribution
Get your music to listeners, sell directly to fans and build a business around your recordings—without confusing distribution, publishing and ownership.
Start with the rights. Build the audience. Track the revenue.
Three ways your music reaches paying audiences
Streaming & downloads
A distributor delivers recordings and metadata to services such as Spotify and Apple Music. Read the agreement carefully: fees, deductions, available territories and takedown policies vary.
Spotify for Artists ↗Direct-to-fan sales
Sell downloads, physical music or merchandise to listeners who want to support you directly. Compare platform and payment fees and understand who receives customer information.
Bandcamp for Artists ↗Your own artist website
Maintain a permanent home for your music, biography, videos, show dates and mailing list. Digital checkout can be added when you have a payment provider and appropriate licensing arrangements.

There is no single best distributor for every artist. Compare the total cost and the rights you are granting rather than choosing solely on headline pricing.
Financial questions
- Is there a recurring subscription, one-time release fee or commission on earnings?
- What happens to live releases if you stop paying?
- When are sales reports and payments available?
- Are there currency-conversion, withdrawal or additional-service fees?
Rights and operations
- Do you retain ownership of the master recording?
- Which stores, regions and content types are supported?
- Can you keep existing ISRCs when moving a recording?
- Who handles corrections, disputes, content claims and takedowns?
Prepare your release information correctly
Core recording details
- Exact track and release titles
- Primary and featured artists
- Songwriters, composers, producers and contributors
- Audio master, cover art and release date
- Explicit-content designation where relevant
Rights and identifiers
- ISRC for each distinct recording
- UPC/EAN or other release identifier as supplied by the distributor
- Master copyright owner and composition ownership details
- Written split agreements and licenses
- Consistent artist naming across platforms
An ISRC identifies a specific sound recording or music video, not the underlying musical composition. Do not assign a new ISRC simply because an unchanged recording is distributed through a different service. Check the official ISRC guidance for exceptions involving materially different recordings.

Riddims and shared instrumentals
Confirm who owns the instrumental master and composition, what license each vocalist holds, how producer and songwriter splits are recorded, and whether multiple versions can be distributed.
Dubplates and custom recordings
Document whether the client is buying a private custom performance, limited use or broader commercial rights. Permission to commission a dubplate is not automatically permission to distribute it commercially.
Samples, covers and remixes
Check applicable permissions for compositions and masters before monetization. A credit or verbal understanding does not necessarily replace a license.
Jamaica-to-international releases
Keep split sheets, payment records, contact details and the territories covered by distribution and collection agreements. Cross-border royalties often involve different organizations.
Independent artist action plan
- Audit ownership: document who wrote, produced, recorded and financed the music.
- Complete agreements: obtain signatures for splits, features, samples, riddims and licensed recordings.
- Organize masters and metadata: use consistent names, credits and recording identifiers.
- Compare distributors: inspect agreements, renewal fees, payment timelines and cancellation terms.
- Deliver ahead of your planned launch: allow time for platform review, corrections and promotion.
- Claim artist profiles: verify accounts on each supported platform and keep biographies current.
- Build direct fan connections: establish a website and opt-in mailing list with a clear privacy notice.
- Review reports regularly: reconcile distributor statements with other royalty registrations and receipts.
Build beyond the platforms
Your website, mailing list, live-show audience and verified artist identity are long-term assets. Streaming platforms help people discover your music; your independent channels help you maintain relationships with fans.
