Kabaka Pyramid is putting lyricism back at the centre of his creative story.

In a recent Reggaeville interview, the Grammy-winning Jamaican reggae artist discussed how Rebel Music – The Lyrics Tape reconnects him with the artistic identity he began developing through his breakthrough 2011 project, Rebel Music.

Returning to the Foundation

Kabaka described the earlier project as the beginning of his career and the point at which he started defining himself as an artist.

Over the years, his music evolved as he introduced more melody and worked to reach a broader audience. His latest project returns to the dense lyricism, social commentary and musical influences that helped shape his original sound.

The project also reflects Kabaka’s connection to reggae, dancehall and hip-hop, while revisiting themes that remain central to his work.

Rebuilding After Losing Unreleased Music

During the interview, Kabaka revealed that corrupted files caused him to lose a folder containing several years of unreleased recordings.

Instead of allowing the setback to stop his creative process, he began producing new beats and recording ideas with a laptop and basic microphone while his regular studio equipment was unavailable.

That rebuilding process eventually contributed to the direction of his latest material.

Reggae in the Social-Media Era

The conversation also explores the challenge of presenting message-driven reggae music in a digital environment that often rewards immediate reactions.

Kabaka explained that artists increasingly need to communicate ideas quickly enough to connect on social platforms while still maintaining substance and meaning.

His comments offer an important perspective on the changing relationship between reggae, radio, streaming and social media. For artists working in a lyrical genre, the challenge is finding a balance between depth and the speed at which audiences now consume music.

The interview provides a revealing look at Kabaka Pyramid’s writing process, his resilience following the loss of unreleased work and his effort to preserve reggae’s lyrical foundation.
